Tips for Making Coffee

While using a coffee percolator, there are many cosiderations that should be taken in mind.

How fine to grind the coffee beans

Each of the different coffee grinders allows you to vary the courseness of the coffee grinds. The grind should suit the coffee brewer you are using and the type of coffee you are making. Here are the difference between basic coffee grinds:

Course Grind

This coffee grind is fairly large, suitable for French presses and percolators.

Medium Grind

An all-purpose grind, suitable for most drip type brewers. Has the consistency of table salt.

Fine Grind

This is the grind you would want for espresso. If you like your coffee really strong you can use this  grind in your drip type brewer.
What if your coffee tastes weak?
If your coffee tastes a little on the weaker side, the three commonest causes may be
You didn't use enough amount of coffee in the brew. For every 6 ounces of water 2 tablespoons of ground coffee beans should be used.
The coffee was too coarsely ground that is your aren't leaving the beans in the coffee grinder for long enough.
The coffee wasn't brewed for long enough.

If everything was perfect, but still you didn't get stronger taste, you have to look at the origin of your coffee beans and the darkness of the roast. These are not related to the strength or weakness of the brew. But they do impact the body, flavuor and taste of the final cup.

The right proportion of coffee beans to water

To enjoy a great cup of coffee, you need to add the exact proportion of water. Once you know the basic equation, you can adjust the quantities to suit your taste. The basic equation for a perfect coffee is  combination of 2 heaped tablespoons of coffee, 6 ounces of good water and a brewing time of 4-6 minutes.
The same equation applies to all coffee brewing methods - whether you are using a French Press, coffee brewer or percolator

Tips for Brewing the Best Coffee

Select the strength and flavor of coffee you prefer and follow brewing instructions for perfect coffee!
Use fresh coffee.
Use freshly drawn cold water - filtered water works best.
Use brewer is free of lime buildup by running a pot of equal parts vinegar and water through the coffee maker, followed by a pot of water only to rinse.
Transfer coffee to a thermal carafe to maintain the coffee's flavor and texture.

How to Store

After opening a new container of coffee, keep coffee to a tightly sealed storage container and store in a cool dry place to ensure that the coffee maintains its full flavor characteristics.

Whether you're planning a brunch, dinner or dessert gathering, coffee is key! If you're hosting over 25 people, use a large percolator. Many schools, churches and grocery stores have them on hand to lend or rent out.
